Victoria Memories

From its humble beginnings as a trading post to its reign as the "Queen City," Victoria, British Columbia has seen it all – gold rushes, royal visits, eccentric characters, and enough scandals to make its history a wild ride.

Victoria Memories is not about fancy tea parties and the elite of the day – unless they play a role in the hidden ‘murkiness’ of Victoria. Beneath the surface of this seemingly tranquil town are the stories of regular people and places with its back alleys, murders, bootlegging, and plot twists. It's a place where even the statues have stories to tell, and every old cobblestone seems to whisper secrets from times long gone.

More About Sue, the Historian Behind Victoria Memories

Yes - I am a Historian. Attending the University of Victoria I specialized in British Columbia History, and in fact taught for eight years. But the trenches of academia were not for me. I dug myself out and decided to strike out on my own - just like those early pioneers (except my journey was a little more cushy). I’m also the author of WestShore Memories (that you can also subscribe to) and several books on Northern BC, if you’re interested

So now, as an enthusiastic local historian, who may or may not be fueled by copious amounts of caffeine, I scour dusty archives and leave no stone unturned to find those untold or forgotten stories of Victoria’s past. Trust me - there’s a lot of history hidden out there.
